The cost of sending your kids back to school can be immense. But only consumable items such as erasers and pencils need to be purchased new. You can save and equip your student at a discount by using nearly new items.
Jeans are the uniform of today’s schools. They are easily available in many sizes and styles to fit your child comfortably. They are sturdy, last for years and should never be warn looking new. Broken in, worn and faded is the style. If you watch the classifieds, you can often find them sold by the 10 gallon bag. Find used clothing in Lake City or check the Ocala Clothing & Jewelry page for the latest bargains.
Children often outgrow their shoes before they have worn them out. Younger kids will love shoes with their favorite cartoon characters. High schoolers will respond to brand names. Shoes should be in good repair with a new set of laces. A little cleaning or sneaker white is sometimes all you need.
Laptops and Computers
Any computer or laptop built in the last 6 years can do just about anything a student will need it, too. By buying used, you can get more features and a bigger screen for the same price. Here’s a quick list of features that must be available and work:
- Internet Ready
- WiFi & LAN cable
- Video out
- Extra USB ports
- Power cords and battery for laptops
Furniture and Appliances
Even if you student isn’t heading off to college, you may want to consider upgrading their home study place with a “new” desk. Your child may have outgrown their old one. A proper study environment with plenty of light helps establish good study habits. This need not be new, it simply must be comfortable.
For the college student, a mini-fridge and microwave oven are essential. You can pick one up in the classifieds for cheap. The best I ever saw was pair of mini-fridges with 1″ sheet of plywood forming the top of the desk. His chair fit in the middle.
