Choosing an engagement ring for your significant other is an important occasion, both because of the commitment you are about to make and also because it is difficult to choose a ring among the various you will see. Take your time choosing one, as this ring will have to be worn for a very long time.
The price of the ring will depend on the design, and also the type of gold, but a large factor will be the cut and size of the diamond. You will hear of four Cs where diamonds are concerned.
The cut of the diamond is dependent on the skills of the person who cut it. The particular cut is what gives the diamond its sparkle. The shape is usually round cut but there is also the emerald, the pear, the marquise, the princess, the oval and the heart shape.
The weight and size is measured in carat. 1 carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. The carat is further divided into points, of which there are 100 in a carat. So ¾ carat = 75 points. The average size for engagement rings is half to one carat.
Diamonds with a strong color are very rare and have a special term ‘fancies’. The typical color is transparent and these diamonds get a D grade. Diamonds can also have subtle colors but the most precious of all are the clear diamonds.
A diamond contains some cloudiness, called ‘inclusions’, which is invisible to the naked eye and which an expert jeweler sees under a loupe or magnifying lens. The grading here is Slightly Included 1 (SI1) for average diamonds or goes up the scale for better quality. Internally Flawless (IF) is as the name suggests, perfect, and therefore very expensive; while Imperfect 3 (I3) is the worst quality on the scale.
Because you will be spending a lot of money, it makes sense to get a certificate for what you are buying, to make sure it is the real deal. This should mean that you are not sold a cheaper colorless gem that looks like a diamond but isn’t. Good quality certification includes: GIA (Gemmological Institute of America), HRD, IGL, EGL, and AGS.
Finally, choose something you can afford but that matches style of your loved one. Remember that you want to make a good impression. Most importantly, take into account the tastes of the person you are buying for. There are several types of gold:
- Two tone
And there are also many designs to choose from varying from traditional to modern or very creative and unusual. The most popular type of engagement ring is the classic diamond solitaire, though again the setting of the diamond can vary in design. A good way to buy a ring for your betrothed will love is to get advice from their friends and relatives. Take them shopping with you. Also, listen for hints as to their likes while out shopping or looking at related magazines.
