Ocala, FL (March, 2010) – The United Way of Marion County recently honored Dirk Leeward with the prestigious Bonnie Heath Award of Excellence. The award recognizes outstanding community leadership over a period of at least 10 years.
Leeward first participated as a member of the United Way Ambassadors, a group of young leaders, in the late 1980s. He is serving his 10th year on the United Way Board of Directors. He has served on the allocations committee, assisted in the technological development of the organization, and he was instrumental in starting the Young Leaders Society and the Marion Volunteer Network.
Leeward is a former board member of the Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In / Florida Air Museum and currently serves on the boards of the Boys & Girls Club of Marion County, the Discovery Science Center and the Ocala Sunset Rotary Club.
The award is named after legendary local horseman Bonnie Heath, who helped organize the United Way in Marion County in 1961 and served as its chairman for two years. Heath lead a fundraising program called the Stallion Sweepstakes, which at one time supplied 25% of all the money raised by the United Way.
Dirk Leeward is the Vice President of Business Development at USA4SALE Networks, Inc., an Ocala-based publisher of community marketplace websites. He is also the owner of Leeward Properties, LLC a real estate and airpark development firm.
