The opening line of your ad will determine how many people will read it. We are now pushing your ads to more and more places on the Internet, like search engines, Facebook, Twitter, and RSS readers. While your advertising has more places to be distributed, it makes the basic rules of advertising more important.
Take a quick look at our search page, and search for the word phone. Most of the results will be for cell phones. Notice the make and model of the phone is listed first off.
Approximately, the first line of your ad will show. Same goes for RSS readers, Facebook, and others. That’s why your first line has to really grab someone’s attention. It has to sell. Only an interested person will click to read the rest of the ad text. Let’s take a look at two examples.
Here’s the wrong way to start an ad:
“Are you looking for a great deal? You are going to love this. Beautiful and comfortable,“
The rest is cut off. I’m not sure if they are selling a house or a couch, but there’s no compelling reason to click. N0w, here’s a real example of a wanted ad for bathroom fixtures:
“WANTED! I’m disabled & my husband works real hard to provide for our children. We are renting to own a run down mobile home. Like others we are just getting by. I’m praying someone will read this that maybe just got done remodeling there house an have left over stuff and or used is fine also. we need, tub, toilet, vanity with sink, plywood, windows, fridge, stove, ac unit, vinyl flooring, light fixtures, 5″ fencing and more. we have some money. We’ll pick up Please help if you can, God Bless”
The person who actually has a tub or toilet to give away may never see the request. Make a good impression with an opening line that sells.
