Enjoying a sunny day in a sparkling pool is what summer is all about. If you don’t have a pool, you may not know about the convenience and affordability of above ground pools. You can install them yourself at a fraction of the cost of an inground pool. And depending on the size, maintenance costs are often less.
Decide What Kind of Above Ground Pool Will Serve You Best
When purchasing an above ground pool, you will need to decide how long you want to enjoy your pool. If you are just looking for something the kids can play in during summer vacation, a small vinyl pool will do. Inflate top top ring, and fill with water. Anything beyond a couple weeks, will require regular maintenance with a sufficiently sized pump and filter. A vinyl model will still work, but with more effort than a corrosion-resistant metal pool.
For a costly installation that will increase the value of your home and allow concrete pool deck, you want an inground pool. Before you make the investment, use a medium sized above ground pool as your practice pool. When you are ready, upgrade in the spring.
Choose a Pool that Is Big Enough for All Your Swimmers
Imagine soaking up the sun as you float on an inflatable raft. Maybe there’s a cup holder with a cold drink filled with crushed ice. Either you kicked everyone else out or your pool will need to be about 18 feet in diameter. Any pool smaller than 10 feet will start to feel like a hot tub.
If you plan to do any laps, you can use a large pool and swim 30 feet at a time or scale down to an single person water treadmill, like those made by iPool or Endless Pools. These small fitness pools recirculate the water to create a constant current and allow for water fitness and low impact exercise. Some products will install on your existing above ground pools so you can enjoy a large pool and swim training.
No Swimmer Likes a Green Pool
For permanently installed above ground pools, you will need a maintenance schedule to clean your pool and test its Ph levels. Use a pool brush to scrub down the liner and allow the filter to remove the particles. Chlorinators help keep your pool sparkling and bacteria free. (Read Fixing Problems with Your Pool or Spa.) A salt chlorine generator makes it’s own chlorine from salt, and is gentle on your eyes, skin and hair. The initial cost for a generator is higher, but is cheaper to operate.
A Safe Pool is a Fun Pool
Consider safety when choosing your pool. Children should always be supervised. Child safety pool alarms use wave and motion detectors to alert you should children or pets accidentally fall in. Safety nets can also be added when the pool is not in use. Lastly, be cautious of too many pool toys and floats which could block a week swimmer from coming up for air.
